Do you know about baby tattoos ? A tattoo is a kind of body modification, created by inserting ink, either indelible or temporary, in to the dermis level of the skin to change the pigment.

The expressed word tattoo, or tattow in the 18th hundred years, is a loanword from the Polynesian expression tatau, indicating "to create". The Oxford British Dictionary provides etymology of tattoo as "In 18th c. tattaow, tattow. From Polynesian (Samoan, Tahitian, Tongan, etc.) tatau. In Marquesan, tatu." Before the importation of the Polynesian expression, the practice of tattooing had been defined in the Western world as painting, scarring, or staining.

This is not to be mixed up with the origins of the word for the military services drumbeat or performance -- see military tattoo. In this case, the English word tattoo comes from the Dutch phrase taptoe (OED).

The first written reference to the term tattoo (or tatau), looks in the journal of Joseph Banking companies (24 February 1743 - 19 June 1820), the naturalist aboard Captain Cook's ship the HMS Endeavour: "I will now mention just how they recognise themselves indelibly, each of them is so proclaimed by their humour or disposition".

The term "tattoo" was taken to Europe by the explorer Adam Cook, when he came back in 1769 from his first voyage to Tahiti and New Zealand. In his narrative of the voyage, he identifies an procedure called "tattaw".

Tattoo lovers might refer to tattoos as "ink", "parts", "skin area art", "tattoo art", "tats", or "work"; to the designers as "tattoo artists", "tattooers", or "tattooists"; and also to places where they work as "tattoo shops", "tattoo studios", or "tattoo parlors".

Mainstream free galleries hold exhibitions of both normal and custom tattoo designs such as Beyond Pores and skin, at the Museum of Croydon. Copyrighted tattoo designs that are directed and mass-produced to tattoo performers are known as "flash", a notable example of industrial design. Flash bed sheets are prominently viewed in many tattoo parlors for the intended purpose of providing both creativity and ready-made tattoo images to customers.

The Japanese expression irezumi means "insertion of ink" and can mean body art using tebori, the traditional Japanese palm method, a Western-style machine, or for example, any approach to tattooing using insertion of printer ink. The most common word used for traditional Japanese tattoo designs is Horimono. Japan may use the word "tattoo" to indicate non-Japanese styles of tattooing.
