Do you know about mother tatoos ? A tattoo is a kind of body modification, created by inserting ink, either temporary or indelible, into the dermis coating of the skin to improve the pigment.

The word tattoo, or tattow in the 18th century, is a loanword from the Polynesian phrase tatau, meaning "to write". The Oxford English Dictionary provides etymology of tattoo as "In 18th c. tattaow, tattow. From Polynesian (Samoan, Tahitian, Tongan, etc.) tatau. In Marquesan, tatu." Before the importation of the Polynesian expression, the practice of tattooing had been described in the West as painting, scarring, or staining.

This isn't to be mixed up with the roots of the word for the armed forces drumbeat or performance -- see armed service tattoo. In this case, the English term tattoo is derived from the Dutch expression taptoe (OED).

The first written mention of the word tattoo (or tatau), looks in the journal of Joseph Banks (24 Feb 1743 - 19 June 1820), the naturalist aboard Captain Cook's dispatch the HMS Endeavour: "I shall now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, all of them is so proclaimed by their humour or disposition".

The word "tattoo" was taken to European countries by the explorer Adam Cook, when he delivered in 1769 from his first voyage to New and Tahiti Zealand. In his narrative of the voyage, he identifies an operation called "tattaw".

Tattoo lovers may make reference to tattoos as "ink", "items", "epidermis art", "tattoo art", "tats", or "work"; to the designers as "tattoo artists", "tattooers", or "tattooists"; and to places where they are "tattoo shops", studios" "tattoo, or "tattoo parlors".

Mainstream art galleries maintain exhibitions of both classic and custom tattoo designs such as Beyond Pores and skin, at the Museum of Croydon. Copyrighted tattoo designs that are delivered and mass-produced to tattoo artists are known as "adobe flash", a notable instance of commercial design. Flash sheets are prominently viewed in many tattoo parlors for the purpose of providing both ideas and ready-made tattoo images to customers.

The Japanese term irezumi means "insertion of ink" and often means tattoo designs using tebori, the original Japanese hand method, a Western-style machine, or for that matter, any method of tattooing using insertion of ink. The most common expression used for traditional Japanese tattoo designs is Horimono. Japan may use the term "tattoo" to indicate non-Japanese varieties of tattooing.
