Do you know about tattoo children's names ? A tattoo is a form of body modification, created by inserting ink, either non permanent or indelible, into the dermis level of the skin to improve the pigment.

The word tattoo, or tattow in the 18th century, is a loanword from the Polynesian phrase tatau, signifying "to create". The Oxford British Dictionary gives the etymology of tattoo as "In 18th c. tattaow, tattow. From Polynesian (Samoan, Tahitian, Tongan, etc.) tatau. In Marquesan, tatu." Prior to the importation of the Polynesian phrase, the practice of tattooing had been described in the Western world as painting, scarring, or staining.

This isn't to be confused with the origins of the word for the armed forces drumbeat or performance -- see armed service tattoo. In this full case, the English expression tattoo is derived from the Dutch phrase taptoe (OED).

The first written reference to the word tattoo (or tatau), appears in the journal of Joseph Bankers (24 February 1743 - 19 June 1820), the naturalist aboard Captain Cook's ship the HMS Endeavour: "I will now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, each of them is so marked by their humour or disposition".

The term "tattoo" was brought to Europe by the explorer James Cook, when he went back in 1769 from his first voyage to New and Tahiti Zealand. In his narrative of the voyage, he refers to an operation called "tattaw".

Tattoo fans may make reference to tattoos as "printer ink", "pieces", "pores and skin art", "tattoo art", "tats", or "work"; to the designers as "tattoo artists", "tattooers", or "tattooists"; also to places where they work as "tattoo shops", "tattoo studios", or "tattoo parlors".

Mainstream free galleries hold exhibitions of both typical and custom tattoo designs such as Beyond Pores and skin, at the Museum of Croydon. Copyrighted tattoo designs that are dispatched and mass-produced to tattoo performers are known as "adobe flash", a notable instance of industrial design. Flash sheets are prominently shown in many tattoo parlors for the intended purpose of providing both creativity and ready-made tattoo images to customers.

The Japanese expression irezumi means "insertion of ink" and can mean tattoo designs using tebori, the original Japanese hand method, a Western-style machine, or for example, any method of tattooing using insertion of printer ink. The most common phrase used for traditional Japanese tattoo designs is Horimono. Japan may use the word "tattoo" to signify non-Japanese varieties of tattooing.
