The expressed word tattoo, or tattow in the 18th hundred years, is a loanword from the Polynesian expression tatau, meaning "to create". The Oxford British Dictionary gives the etymology of tattoo as "In 18th c. tattaow, tattow. From Polynesian (Samoan, Tahitian, Tongan, etc.) tatau. In Marquesan, tatu." Prior to the importation of the Polynesian word, the practice of tattooing had been detailed in the West as painting, scarring, or staining.

This is not to be confused with the roots of the term for the armed forces drumbeat or performance -- see armed forces tattoo. In this case, the English term tattoo is derived from the Dutch expression taptoe (OED).
The first written reference to the term tattoo (or tatau), shows up in the journal of Joseph Bankers (24 Feb 1743 - 19 June 1820), the naturalist aboard Captain Cook's ship the HMS Endeavour: "I will now mention the way they tag themselves indelibly, all of them is so designated by their humour or disposition".
The word "tattoo" was taken to Europe by the explorer Wayne Cook, when he delivered in 1769 from his first voyage to Tahiti and New Zealand. In his narrative of the voyage, he identifies an procedure called "tattaw".
Tattoo fanatics may make reference to tattoos as "ink", "items", "pores and skin art", "tattoo art", "tats", or "work"; to the creators as "tattoo artists", "tattooers", or "tattooists"; also to places where they are "tattoo shops", "tattoo studios", or "tattoo parlors".
Mainstream art galleries carry exhibitions of both normal and custom tattoo designs such as Beyond Pores and skin, at the Museum of Croydon. Copyrighted tattoo designs that are mass-produced and delivered to tattoo designers are known as "adobe flash", a notable illustration of industrial design. Flash mattress sheets are prominently exhibited in many tattoo parlors for the purpose of providing both inspiration and ready-made tattoo images to customers.
The Japanese expression irezumi means "insertion of ink" and can mean tats using tebori, the original Japanese side method, a Western-style machine, or for example, any method of tattooing using insertion of ink. The most frequent phrase used for traditional Japanese tattoo designs is Horimono. Japan may use the term "tattoo" to suggest non-Japanese styles of tattooing.
